The kākāriki karaka is a little-known bird species that faces significant challenges, being declared extinct twice. This strategy document aims to introduce readers to the kākāriki karaka and capture its unique character through the use of imagery and design.
The colors used in this document are inspired by the bold hues of the bird's plumage, reflecting the kākāriki karaka's strong character. We lead with Teo Māori and feature a traditional illustration on the cover, while incorporating wood sculpture patterns throughout to emphasise the bird's immense cultural and spiritual significance.
With many bird species in decline across Aotearoa New Zealand, raising awareness about the kākāriki karaka is essential to secure funding for recovery projects. This project is a collaborative effort between the Department of Conservation and Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, featuring illustrations by Caine Tauwhare, a contemporary Māori artist and master carver from Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke.
